Progressive Momentum for Walsh: Capuano, Chang-Diaz, Arroyo & More

As recent polls are showing significant momentum for Marty Walsh, the JP Progressives reached the conclusion that voters across Boston are reaching as they begin to take a much closer look at the two candidates. That conclusion is that the candidate with the proven record of progressive leadership is unquestionably Marty Walsh. We’re proud to support him, help get the word out, and join an impressive and diverse coalition of leaders and organizations supporting him.

If you are similarly impressed with the tide of support for Marty, join us to canvass and help sway the remaining undecideds in JP. It’s a close race, and we can keep moving JP in the Walsh column, but only if we work for it. We’ll be knocking on doors tomorrow, Oct. 26. We meet at Walsh’s JP HQ at 10:30am, but you are free to join anytime this weekend. Email us if you can help.

Endorser Quotes

U.S. Congressman Michael Capuano
“Marty is one of the few people that I have ever met that I would cross over broken glass to help. I don’t do this very often because I think members of Congress should use their endorsement and their support very sparingly. [Marty Walsh] will stand up for people – he’ll stand up for human rights, civil liberties. He’ll stand up for education. He’ll stand up for housing needs and do it with strength, with integrity, and directness.  I don’t think you could ask for more from any elected official.”

Senator Sonia Chang Diaz
“[Marty] has demonstrated a record on the issues that I see as key to both fighting poverty and building a prosperous city for all Bostonians. Like education – I have seen Marty take tough votes and be willing to stand up his friends when it comes to putting kids first and there should be no mistake about that. He will tell you what he thinks, he will tell you like it is and finally – and I think most importantly – I know Marty to be a coalition builder and a coalition partner.”

Sen. Linda Dorcena Forry
“Marty understands the diversity of our city is what makes us a unique city. He wants to diversify our workforce at all levels of our economy, not just at City Hall, but on the building trades construction sites, in the downtown boardrooms and in every classroom in Boston.”

Rep. Gloria Fox
“He has taken a stand for basic human needs and human rights ever since I met him in the House of Representatives. He knows the truth, speaks the truth, and tells it from his heart. That’s another reason why I can believe him, I can trust him.”

Rep. Liz Malia
“Marty was among the first elected officials to support Elizabeth Warren‘s campaign. He supported her because she speaks for and to a new progressive agenda for our country. He supported her because she’s not afraid to say that labors’ agenda for quality and fairness is America’s agenda. Now it’s Marty’s chance to bring that same message in his campaign for Boston.”

Rep. Russell Holmes
“It’s not just simply, ‘does he care?’ He cares but he is also a person of action. We want to make sure that we hire and elect a person that is going to care for us, that is going to be there and listen to us.”

Rep. Carlos Henriquez
“Marty’s leadership style has always been inclusive and he listens – he listens first before he leads. He understands neighborhoods, and he understands working class people.”

Councilor Felix G. Arroyo
“Throughout my campaign for Mayor I talked about issues that mattered to all Bostonians, like finding pathways out of poverty, closing the achievement gap, and ensuring that everyone has access to opportunity and a voice in the direction of our City. Marty Walsh stands out as the candidate who uniquely understands the critical importance of these issues for Boston’s future.”

Councilor Tito Jackson
“Marty will be the bridge between the two Bostons that we have now–one downtown and one uptown. He has stood strong with our neighborhood and with our community and so today I am so happy to stand in my home community and my home neighborhood and endorse the next Mayor of the City of Boston, Marty Walsh.”

Former State Rep. Charlotte Golar Richie
“During my campaign for mayor, I talked about the tale of two cities… of the haves and have nots. Marty understands the struggles of working people because he has lived through it.”

School Committee Member John Barros
“We need a Mayor who will not only work to improve our education system, but one that will work to ensure every child has a quality educational seat, one that will work to ensure every resident and neighborhood has opportunity for affordable housing, one that will work to ensure every neighborhood is benefiting from economic development, and ensure that every resident lives in a safe neighborhood. Marty is the candidate that can do that.”

Rev. Jeffrey Brown
“As a faith partner and city advocate, I am most concerned about youth and families most vulnerable to social ills such as violence and poverty. We need a game-changing leader who will creatively and effectively level the economic playing field for all Bostonians and empowers the community to end the era of violence in our city. That man is Marty Walsh.”

Arline Isaacson, LGBT Activist
(On Marty Walsh’s active role during the equal marriage battles of 2005-2007)
“You can differentiate them in part by factoring in this: When you were in the war, who jumped into the trench to fight with you by your side? And Marty jumped in and won a Medal of Honor fighting with us in the trenches. He did it at significant cost to his political base.”

“We believe in his record as a champion of all working people, and in his commitment to be a mayor who is willing to take a strong stand against injustice and inequity on behalf of all of the city’s residents.

“We believe in Marty’s leadership and commitment to quality schools and learning environments for all of the city’s children, regardless of neighborhood or socioeconomic status, to bridge the opportunity and achievement gaps that have plagued our city.”

JP Progressives
“Marty is the only candidate who can point to a consistently progressive voting record, which is especially notable given that he represents a conservative Dorchester and South Boston district.”

Rep. Ruth Balser (D-Newton)
“He has been a reliable partner, friend, ally, and champion when it came to fighting for women and girls in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Whether it was fighting for access to reproductive health care, comprehensive health education, protection from domestic violence, and economic equality for women, Marty was always there.”

Rep. Jay Kaufman (D-Lexington)
“He has walked the walk of the people he is trying to speak for. This isn’t just a matter of politics with this guy, this is a matter of values, this is a matter of who he is.”

Rep. Denise Provost (D-Somerville)
“Marty understands the challenges of unemployment in urban populations and he has worked with me on the issue of job creation in my community because he has been there with his own community.”
