Joe Avellone is a Democrat from Wellesley running for Governor of Massachusetts. Joe has served in various management leadership roles throughout his distinguished private and public sector career, including surgeon, entrepreneur, healthcare executive, Selectman and Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy Reserves. He knows how to create jobs and develop a competitive workforce for the global marketplace. Joe’s experience in healthcare management also provides him with a deep understanding of the fiscal governance necessary to lead Massachusetts through budgetary challenges and rising healthcare costs.Joe currently works as the Corporate Senior Vice President at PAREXEL International, a global bio-pharmaceutical research company, where he oversees 10,000 employees worldwide, as well as offices in 50 countries.
He received his undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College, and MD from Harvard Medical School before earning his Masters in Public Administration from Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government. Joe spent five years as a resident surgeon at Brigham and Women’s Hospital before moving to New Hampshire where he served as a surgeon at Concord Hospital. Following his experience as a surgeon, Joe decided he could best serve his community through a career in healthcare management, focused on the healthcare system itself.
In addition to serving as Lieutenant in the United States Navy Reserves’ Medical Corp, Joe developed skills in management and organizing while serving as Chief Operating Officer (COO) for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Veritas Medicine, a start-up Internet company that qualified and matched patients to potential clinical research studies.
In addition to serving a six-year tenure on the Wellesley Board of Selectmen, Joe has consistently engaged in local, state and national politics. His past political involvement includes volunteering on various Democratic Presidential Campaigns, serving as the healthcare advisor to Senator Paul Tsongas’ Presidential Campaign and on Senator John Kerry’s Presidential Campaign Finance Committee.
Joe Avellone lives in Wellesley with his wife Sandy, and they have three children.
